ICC West Valley's Surmala in collaboration with Sangeethaamsha presents Swara Sandhya Baithak Series 2023

"A mesmerizing Hindustani and Carnatic medley by a classical music ensemble"

The fundamental idea of the concert is to explore the fine nuances of both forms of Bharatiya Shastriya Sangeeth, mainly Carnatic and Hindustani. This concert provides a gateway in understanding the sophisticated beauty of ragas which can be presented in both forms of music. You will be exploring the ragas which are almost similar. Indeed there are few differences but it has its essence and creates the mood of its own. Come and enjoy the evening with an ensemble of classical music.

ABOUT OUR ARTISTS

  1. Smt. Usha Prabhu Hungund- Usha is an Indian classical vocalist. She is a prolific carnatic vocal performer and also pursues Hindustani vocals. Presently she is taking advanced training under the tutelage of Vidwan Sri Malladi Suribabu from Vijayawada. Her initial training was under the guidance of Vidwan Sri Shringeri H.S.Nagaraj, Shimoga from the age of seven and later training under Vidushi Smt M.S.Sheela from Bangalore. She performs at many Indian classical venues in California and also performs at sabha's in India. She has recorded and released two albums. She is committed to increasing musical awareness through her educational efforts by conducting music classes, several Devaranaama workshops and voice culture classes.

  2. Arvind Sheshadri- Aravind hails from a family of musicians from the state of Karnataka. He had his early music training from his Grandmother, Vidushi.Smt.A.Rajamma Keshavamurthy and his father a renowned violinist Vidwan Sri.B.K.Sheshadri. He had advanced training under Sangeetha Vidyasagara Violin Vidwan Late Sri.R.R.KESHAVAMURTHY. He is presently pursuing advanced training under his brother Anand Sheshadri who is a renowned vocalist and mrudanga artist. Aravind has been performing from past 20 years at various Sabhas and organizations, in India and the US. He has performed several duet Violin concerts with his father. In the US he has accompanied several renowned visiting artists in the Bay area and San Diego such as Vidwan Sri Vidyabhushana, Vidhushi Dr Suma Sudhindra, Sri Vid Akshay Padmanabhan and others.

  3. Akshay Prabhakaran- Akshay Prabhakaran received his B.S in Computer Science at Santa Clara University. He is a senior student of Kalaimamani Shertalai Ananthakrishnan and Shri Gopi Lakshminarayanan and completed his mridangam arangetram in September 2016 accompaning Vidwan Shri Sikkil Gurucharan. He has won awards at Papanasam sivan and Cleveland Aradhana compettitions. He has accompanied many Chennai and bay area artists during the music season and contines to be mentored by his gurus.

  4. Sekhar Sarukkai- Sekhar studied Mridangam under late Vidwan T.A.S. Mani at the Karnataka College of Percussion in Bangalore, starting at the age of 9. Sekhar plays South Indian instruments including Mridangam, Kanjira and Ghatam. After moving to California he has accompanied several local and international artists. He has also played on the Mridangam and Kanjira for ‘Shiva,’ conceived and choreographed by late legend Pandit Chitresh Das, and also accompanied the Chitresh Das Institute and Toronto Tabla Ensemble in the US premiere of "Sare Nau" (a composition by Ritesh Das) at the Ethnic Dance Festival in San Francisco.

  5. Ajay Sundar Raj- Ajay is a tabla & music enthusiast, is a disciple of Dr. Udayraj Karpur and maestro Pt. Abhijit Banerjee under whom he continues his advanced training in tabla. Ajay is an engineer by profession. Ajay has accompanied various artists in India and Bay area such as Ustad Rais Bale Khan, Ustad Hafiz Bale khan, Nachiketa Yakkundi, Nandini Rao, Manoj Tamhankar, Saxophonist E R Janardhan, Reshma Bhat, Jeff Whittier and many more. Consistently performs with the well-known bay area Kathak artist Jaya Sharma. He has also accompanied Tabla for various Dramas and Bands performed by Bay area and Indian Naatak, Pampa Studios, KKNC, Rang America, Raaga and KKNC organizations.
